My Curriculum
In my doctoral program I will focus on the ways
company managers and leaders make decisions. The issue that interests me in
particular is the extent to which computers can assist in the decision
making process. I would like to research in to the softer issues such as
intuition, human drive and achievement; in order to uncover the areas where
the actual limit for computers is, this limit is interesting in particular
as knowing this will allow managers and leaders to take use computers
optimally in two aspects: They will utilize computers to the fullest extent,
thus not waste any "human" time doing computer's work, and by doing so they
will be able to work more goal oriented in enhancing the skills where humans
are computers superior.
In terms of computer's potential, I
would like to research further into the traditional discipline of “Business
Analytics” known today, and try to extend it into the future by
researching the needs and scope of future enterprises as well as the global
trends in corporate life and technology.
I am also very interested in the unknown areas of the
mind. I would like to research more into what non-metaphysical parameters
decision makers throughout the world use, and additionally how deliberately
such decision-making is used.
This has lead me to customize the
following research courses:
Business
Analytics in the future
Research into the traditional discipline of "Business Analytics" known
today, and try to extend it into the future by researching the needs and
scope of future enterprises as well as the global development.
As benchmark for the
best practices of management of future opportunities and issues, the book
Competing for
the Future by Gary Hamel and C.K. Prahalad is used.
Additionally, the
following literature will be used:
Spotting Patterns on the Fly, Harvard Business Review, November 2002
Management by Stars [Read the article]
Does horoscopes have a place in modern management?
This
study will be carried out by having a number of
participants write down on a scale 1-3 how well their
working day was for a period of three months
–the participants will not know the goal of the research,
and in order to determine if astrological predictions are at all applicable,
these figures will be compared to
these individuals astrological predictions
for each day.
This project will
also include the following literature:
Gutfeeling: Instinct & Spirituality @ work by Peter Urs Bender
Business
Analytics – From Chosen Few to Common World View
[Read the paper]
This project describes the challenge for
organizations to distribute decision support when distributing
responsibility throughout the organizational structure. The paper would
include a general part about the development in organizational life, and a
research part where I would compare the new breed of easy to use business
analytics and intelligence (In this paper exemplified by TARGIT Analysis) to
the classic spreadsheet (In this paper exemplified by Excel). In the
analysis I would employ a jointspace presentation using a Perceptual Map to
map the two products as points and Preference Vectors onto which
Components-of-Imagery can be projected for all the products.
The literature research for the first part of the
paper will be done using the same approach as the "Mind and Management"
paper; I will most likely use
Business @ the Speed of Thought
by Bill Gates as an anchor and relate the additional
of the following literature to this.
Leadership is an Art by Max DePree
The Rise
of the Creative Class by Richard Florida
The Art of War
by Sun Tzu
Warfighting :
Maneuver Warfare in the U.S. Marine Corps edited by
Hayden & Hayden
Infantry
Attacks by Erwin Rommel
The Power of
Now: How Winning Companies Sense & Respond to Change Using Real-Time
Technology by Vivek Ranadivé
Maneuver Warfare, Harvard Business Review, April 2002
Mind and
Management
[Read the
paper]
This project should
be built on a review of the following books:
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.
The Other 90%: How to Unlock Your Vast Untapped Potential for Leadership and
Life by Robert K. Cooper
Motivation in the Real World : The Fine Art of Getting Extra Effort from
Everyone-Including Yourself by Saul W. Gellerman
How People Work by Saul W. Gellerman
Creativity : Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention by
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
Flow: Optimal Experience by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
Mind Over Machine by Hubert Dreyfus
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
The research
will be carried out by
interviewing a number of recognized managers of their attitude and usage of
“Mind Tools” such as spiritual, meditation, flow etc.
The goal of this project is to find out the trend among successful managers
in the “Knowledge Age”, do they use “Mind Tools” at all? -and if so, which
ones?
Meeting the
Needs
of the Web User
[Read the article]
This project should
be built on a review of the following books:
Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity by Jakob Nielsen
Web Navigation: Designing the User Experience by Jennifer Fleming,
Richard Koman (Editor)
The goal of the
research is to see if “Usability” and “Appeal” are one and the same thing,
as well as see if the terms “Usability” and “Appeal” are the same depending
on the experience of the user. The findings of the field research should
then be compared to the guidance and practices suggested by the literature.
Additionally I have completed the
following Rushmore courses:
2255 - Bill
Gates on Business
2256 - Nielsen on
Design
B.U.S. 1001
Book Project: CALM
I will complete my Ph.D. by writing a book called "CALM in the Future", CALM
is an abbreviation for Computer Aided Leadership and
Management. In this book, I will research and identify best practices in
which we can use computers more actively in proactive Management and
Leadership in the Future, as opposed to today where computers
are merely used for storing data and measuring retroactively.
As my work proceeds,
all relevant articles and information will be posted on this website, so
please stay tuned...
